“War Reporting: Filmmakers & Journalists on the Realities of War”
Thursday, October 24, 2013, 6PM – 9PM
Carnegie Library Lecture Hall
Schenley Drive, Oakland
A panel of documentary filmmakers & journalists who risked their lives in Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon, Central & South America, Liberia & South Africa will share their intense personal experiences on reporting from the frontlines. Through detailed anecdotes, they will show how they chased the real story through the fog of war. They will discuss the evolution of modern journalism: how urban warfare, high-speed digital cameras, satellite up-links, social media, and the 24-hour news cycle have forever changed the profession. They will address gender: the specific barriers, challenges and opportunities for female war correspondents. They will talk about security: how they learn to keep themselves safe and survive in conflict regions. They will address censorship and national security – the moral and ethical dilemmas they face. And they will talk about their return home – their own journey to normal.
