Independent filmmakers work outside of the orthodox roles of the sexes that are ingrained in the Hollywood film industry. Yet even outside of Hollywood, women directors are in the minority, and female stereotypes persist on screen. The symposium will look at how women filmmakers have historically cut against the grain of conventions, and will explore newer directions in women’s independent filmmaking. This event includes an afternoon (1:00 – 5:30) of short presentations, screenings, and discussions, and a special evening film screening from the groundbreaking organization Women Make Movies. Copresented by the University of Pittsburgh, Chatham University and The Three Rivers Film Festival. Admission is free, but please preregister at: 412-681-5449.
