Programs and Opportunities

Public Service Announcements (PSA)

WIFM’s popular PSA program has wrapped and will debut in late fall of 2015. Each year, it mounts the production of a 30-second, professional grade PSA commercial, with the crew drawn from its members and matched with local film professionals serving as mentors.

The client is selected from charitable organizations working for vulnerable women and children. The finished PSA is aired by the Charity to benefit its programs. WIFM continues to promote the PSAs and charities through its own website.

The PSA is produced at no cost to the charity, except for a nominal commitment fee. The program, which spans several months, takes the client’s basic ideas and goes through expert creative ideation, script development, storyboarding, filming, editing and the final launch. All mentors and crew work pro bono: the reward is a rich collective learning experience.

Hair Peace Charities is the most recent PSA client. Crisis Center North, Cribs for Kids, and the Women and Girls Foundation have been past beneficiaries of the program.

Opportunities & Resources

WIFM has worked with many women in the past year to provide them with the tools they need to move forward in their careers. In addition to the PSA Program and training workshops, we assist women with personal guidance, access to industry opportunities, and information related to submissions and funding sources.

Seeding the next generation

WIFM directors visit colleges and universities to discuss careers in film and screen-based media, and the importance of remaining in Pittsburgh, which is a fast developing production hub, attracting out-of-state, big-budget movie productions.

Scholarships
WIFM has provided scholarships to women enrolled in film and TV programs totaling nearly $25,000 since 2007. In 2016, we will offer three scholarships. For more information, click here.

PSA Program Qualifications & Criteria For PSA Submissions

The PSA Submission Process will begin again soon.  At that time, we will ask for submissions from our local non-profit community to complete an application for review by our PSA Committee.  Once the applications have been reviewed, three are selected to give an in-person presentation to the committee.  From that, one non-profit organization is chosen to have a PSA produced for them.

Training for the PSA Production Team will begin after the submission process ends.   If you are interested in learning more about this process, please email us at info@wifmpit.org.

The process will include learning the various positions on the crew, learning the WIFM PSA process, learning how you can participate and more.
